Selama ini orang banyak kecele tentang lagu Mandy ini, bahkan saluran segede MTV atau VH1 ngasih ulasan ngawur tentang lagu ini. Banyak cerita nulis kalo lagu ini ditulis buat seekor Anjing, tapi Scott Englis, penulis asli lagu ini ngebantah cerita itu. Lagu “Mandy” (aslinya “Brandy”) ditulis di hari Selasa berhujan pada tahun 1971, di kota London (make piano tetangga lagi). Lagu ini aslinya bertempo cepat, waktu dinyanyiin sama si Scott lagu ini cuma bisa nongkrong di # 10 tangga lagu di Inggris Raya. Kemudian setelah disodorin ke Barry Manilow dan digubah ama doi sendiri, temponya berubah jadi ballad. And, lagu ini adalah single pertama Manilow, debutnya dimulai di Billboard’s HOT 100 chart pada 16 November 1974. Sembilan minggu kemudian, hebatnya lagu ini langsung jadi lagu terpopuler di Amerika sono, Manilow langsung nyetak 3 lagu # 1 hits-nya (termasuk lagu “I write the songs” and “looks like we made it” memuncaki tangga lagu juga). Ngelanjutin cerita si Scott, dia pernah bilang sampe bosen waktu ditanyain apa bener ini lagu nulis tentang anjing? Dia bilang, “people often ask me if “Brandy” was written about a dog. It was NOT, but I know how that story began. During the year I had my 8 minutes of fame with my own rendition of “Brandy” (in the UK), I was awakened at 7 AM by a reporter. He wanted to know WHO brandy was. I would have said anything to get rid of him, so I spat out the first thing that came to mind. It was about a dog like Lassie and I had her sent away. NOW YOU GO AWAY!, I said, and then hung up the phone on him! I guess I’ll have to live with that story”. ” Nah, sekarang ayo kita nyanyi!
